The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly called for an end to the economic, commercial
and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba. Only two
countries – the USA itself and Israel voted against this global call – and only one abstained –
Ukraine. 187 countries voted in favour.
The US blockade against Cuba, imposed in the 1960s, was worsened during the recent
pandemic by the Trump administration, proving – to anyone who still had doubts – the
hypocritical falsehood of the "humanist" and "democratic" arguments with which the US tries
to justify it.
This is a cruel and criminal blockade that aims to hinder Cuba's right to development and,
thus, hamper the living conditions of the Cuban people.
Its extraterritorial character is, in addition to being illegal, typical of those who believe they
own the world, trying to dictate to others with whom they can or cannot have economic and
commercial relations on an international level.
For more than three decades, the world has been demanding the end of the blockade, which
not only continues but has even intensified, making it difficult for the Cuban people to access
essential goods such as medicines, food, fuel, raw materials and damaging the Cuban
economy by billions of euros per year.
But despite all this, Cuba remains at the top of the world in ratings on health, education and
popular participation in political decision-making.
However, as the Cuban authorities state, the country would be “better off without the
blockade”, demanding its immediate lifting.
The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, which recently signed the Appeal "End
the US blockade against Cuba!"- reaffirming the right of Cuba and its people to choose their
path free from external interference, demanding the immediate end of the blockade and the
immediate removal of Cuba from the arbitrary and illegitimate US list of “state sponsors of
terrorism” - reaffirms its solidarity with the Cuban people and urges the Portuguese
Government to adopt initiatives that give continuity and practical expression to the just
position of ending the blockade against Cuba, which it supported at the United Nations
General Assembly.

Mundo rejeita bloqueio dos EUA contra Cuba

A Assembleia Geral da ONU apelou de forma esmagadora ao fim do bloqueio económico, comercial e
financeiro imposto pelos Estados Unidos da América contra Cuba. Apenas dois países – os próprios EUA
e Israel votaram contra este apelo mundial – e só um se absteve – a Ucrânia. 187 países votaram
favoravelmente.
O bloqueio norte-americano contra Cuba, imposto na década de 60, foi agravado durante a recente
pandemia pela administração Trump, comprovando – a quem ainda tivesse dúvidas – a hipócrita falsidade
dos argumentos "humanistas" e "democráticos" com que os EUA o tentam justificar.
Trata-se de um cruel e criminoso bloqueio que visa obstaculizar o direito ao desenvolvimento de Cuba e,
assim, dificultar as condições de vida do povo cubano.
O seu caráter extraterritorial é, para além de ilegal, próprio de quem se julga dono do mundo, tentando
ditar a outros com quem podem ou não ter relações económicas e comerciais no plano internacional.
Desde há mais de três décadas que o mundo reclama o fim do bloqueio, que não só prossegue como se
tem inclusivamente intensificado, dificultando o acesso do povo cubano a bens essenciais como
medicamentos, alimentos, combustíveis, matérias-primas e prejudicando a economia cubana em milhares
de milhões de euros por ano.
Mas apesar de tudo isso, Cuba permanece no topo mundial em índices de saúde. educação e participação
popular na tomada de decisões políticas.
Contudo, como afirmam as autoridades cubanas, o país seria «melhor sem o bloqueio», exigindo o seu
imediato levantamento.
O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação, que subscreveu recentemente o Apelo "Fim ao bloqueio
dos EUA contra Cuba!" - onde se reafirma o direito de Cuba e do seu povo a escolher o seu caminho livre
de ingerências externas, a exigência do imediato fim do bloqueio e a imediata retirada de Cuba da
arbitrária e ilegítima lista dos EUA de «Estados patrocinadores do terrorismo» - reafirma a sua
solidariedade com o povo cubano e insta o Governo português a adotar iniciativas que deem continuidade
e expressão prática à justa posição do fim do bloqueio contra Cuba, que apoiou na Assembleia-geral das
Nações Unidas.
