The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation salutes the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Expressing deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian population, and emphasising that the Palestinian and Israeli populations must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law, the General Assembly of the United Nations: demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire; reiterates its call for all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, namely regarding the protection of civilians; and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as the guarantee of humanitarian access.

In view of the massacre committed by Israel, which began two long months ago and is still underway, against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, but also in other occupied Palestinian territories, the CPPC considers the adoption of this resolution to be of the utmost importance and significance, which counted 153 votes in favour, 23 abstentions and 10 votes against – including votes against by the US and Israel.

A resolution that shows, once again, that the world is on the side of peace and the demand for an immediate ceasefire, as has been expressed by millions of people everywhere, including in Portugal.

The vote against by the US, which on last December 8, had vetoed a draft resolution with similar content in the UN Security Council, evidences its complicity and support for the brutal policy of aggression that Israel carries out and the coverage it gives to crimes and massacres that Israel commits against the Palestinian people.

As the CPPC has been stating: It is urgent to put an end to the war! It is urgent to put an end to the massacres! An immediate ceasefire is urgent! Humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip is urgent! There is an urgent need for a political solution to the Palestinian issue and for peace in the Middle East, which necessarily involves ending the occupation, settlements and Israeli oppression, and guaranteeing the national rights of the Palestinian people, as determined by international law, including in numerous UN resolutions.

Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas exige um cessar-fogo imediato

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação saúda a aprovação pela Assembleia Geral da das Nações Unidas da resolução que exige um cessar-fogo humanitário imediato.

Expressando profunda preocupação com a situação humanitária catastrófica na Faixa de Gaza e com o sofrimento da população palestiniana, e enfatizando que as populações palestiniana e israelita devem ser protegidas de acordo com o direito humanitário internacional, a Assembleia Geral da das Nações Unidas: exige um cessar-fogo humanitário imediato; reitera o seu pedido de que todas as partes cumpram as suas obrigações ao abrigo do direito internacional, incluindo o direito humanitário internacional, nomeadamente no que diz respeito à protecção dos civis; e exige a libertação imediata e incondicional de todos os reféns, bem como a garantia do acesso humanitário.

Face ao massacre cometido por Israel, que teve início há dois longos meses e que continua em curso, contra a população palestiniana na Faixa de Gaza, mas também noutros territórios palestinianos ocupados, o CPPC considera da maior importância e significado a adopção desta resolução, que teve 153 votos a favor, 23 abstenções e 10 votos contra – incluindo os votos contra dos EUA e de Israel.

Uma resolução que evidencia, uma vez mais, que o mundo está do lado da paz e da exigência de um cessar fogo imediato, como tem sido expresso por milhões de pessoas por todo o lado, incluindo em Portugal.

O voto contra dos EUA, que já no passado dia 8 tinha vetado no Conselho de Segurança da ONU um projecto resolução com conteúdo similar, demonstra a sua cumplicidade e apoio à brutal política de agressão que Israel leva a cabo e a cobertura que dá aos crimes e massacres que Israel comete contra o povo palestiniano.

Como o CPPC tem vindo a afirmar: é urgente pôr fim à guerra! É urgente pôr fim aos massacres! É urgente um cessar fogo imediato! É urgente a ajuda humanitária à população palestiniana na Faixa de Gaza! É urgente uma solução política para a questão palestiniana e para a paz no Médio Oriente, que passa necessariamente pelo fim da ocupação, dos colonatos, da opressão israelita, e pela garantia dos direitos nacionais do povo palestiniano, como determina o direito internacional, incluindo em inúmeras resoluções da ONU.
