The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) signed the letter that calls on States around the world to support South Africa's lawsuit that accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention, at the International Court of Justice.

The letter calls on States to present statements of support for the lawsuit initiated by South Africa – which can be done at any time – with the aim of denouncing, holding accountable and preventing Israel from continuing to commit crimes against the Palestinian people, including that of genocide as defined by the Genocide Convention.

The letter states that many countries have already expressed "their horror at the genocidal actions of the State of Israel, the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinians. The Israeli occupation forces have bombed hospitals, homes, United Nations refugee centres, schools, places of worship and escape routes, killing and injuring tens of thousands of Palestinians since October 7, 2023. More than half of those killed are women and children. Israeli leaders have made blatantly genocidal statements, openly declaring their intention to permanently and completely displace the Palestinians from their own land."

Valuing this initiative, the CPPC expresses its commitment to continue denouncing the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, with public mobilisation to put an end to the ongoing massacre in the Gaza Strip, as well as the brutal action of the Israeli military and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the end of the siege on the Gaza Strip and urgent humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population, among other necessary urgent measures.

The CPPC also reaffirms the demand for an end to all forms of violence and discrimination directed against the Palestinian people and for the creation of a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine, within the borders prior to June 1967 and with its capital in East Jerusalem – which involves the dismantling of settlements, of the wall of shame and of Israeli military checkpoints.

Welcoming the enormous success of the demonstration «Peace in the Middle East, Independent Palestine - End to the war! End the massacre!”, which took place on January 14, in Lisbon, with the participation of thousands of people on a route that began in front of the Embassy of the United States of America and ended in front of the Embassy of Israel, we call for participation in the concentration of January 24, with the same motto, at 18.00, at Praceta da Palestina, in Porto.

África do Sul acusa Israel de violação da Convenção sobre o Genocídio

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) subscreveu a carta que apela aos Estados de todo o mundo para que apoiem o processo da África do Sul que acusa Israel de violação da Convenção sobre o Genocídio, no Tribunal Internacional de Justiça.

A carta apela aos Estados para que apresentem declarações de apoio ao processo iniciado pela África do Sul – o que pode ser feito em qualquer momento –, com o objetivo de denunciar, responsabilizar e prevenir que Israel continue a praticar crimes contra o povo palestino, incluindo o de genocídio como definido pela Convenção sobre o Genocídio.

Na carta refere-se que foram muitos os países que já expressaram "o seu horror face às ações genocidas do Estado de Israel, aos crimes de guerra e aos crimes contra a Humanidade cometidos contra os palestinianos. As forças de ocupação israelitas bombardearam hospitais, residências, centros de refugiados das Nações Unidas, escolas, locais de culto e rotas de fuga, matando e ferindo dezenas de milhares de palestinos desde 7 de outubro de 2023. Mais de metade dos mortos são mulheres e crianças. Os líderes israelitas fizeram declarações descaradamente genocidas, declarando abertamente a sua intenção de deslocar permanente e completamente os palestinos da sua própria terra".
Valorizando esta iniciativa, o CPPC manifesta o seu compromisso de prosseguir com a denúncia da ocupação israelita de territórios palestinianos e com a mobilização pública para pôr fim ao massacre que está em curso na Faixa de Gaza, assim como à brutal ação dos militares e colonos israelitas na Cisjordânia e em Jerusalém Oriental, e por um cessar-fogo imediato e permanente, o fim do cerco à Faixa de Gaza e a urgente ajuda humanitária à população palestina, entre outras urgentes medidas que se impõem.

O CPPC reafirma ainda a exigência do fim de todas as formas de violência e discriminação dirigidas contra o povo palestino e da criação do Estado da Palestina soberano, independente e viável, nas fronteiras anteriores a Junho de 1967 e com capital em Jerusalém Leste – o que implica o desmantelamento dos colonatos, do muro da vergonha e dos postos de controlo militares israelitas.

Saudando o grande êxito que constituiu a manifestação «Paz no Médio Oriente, Palestina Independente - Fim à guerra! Fim ao massacre!», que se realizou dia 14 de Janeiro, em Lisboa, com a participação de milhares de pessoas num percurso que iniciou frente à Embaixada dos Estados Unidos da América e terminou frente a Embaixada de Israel, apelamos à participação na concentração de dia 24 de Janeiro, com o mesmo lema, às 18h00, na Praceta da Palestina, no Porto.
