Marking the International Day of Peace, established by the UN, which is celebrated every year on September 21st, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) highlights the dangers of war that mark today's world and calls for the reinforcement of mobilization in defense of peace, disarmament, respect for peoples’ rights.

In the Middle East, the genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, carried out by Israel, is worsening every day: tens of thousands of dead, injured, maimed, orphans, refugees (many of whom are children), in addition to those who are attacked and expelled from their homes by settlers and Israeli soldiers, and those who are arrested and tortured. A massacre that results from an illegal occupation that lasts for decades and is only possible thanks to the military, economic and diplomatic support granted to Israel by the USA, the United Kingdom and the powers of the European Union.

In Eastern Europe, a war continues with no end in sight. A war that should never have started and which must be brought to an end as soon as possible, otherwise it could escalate to disastrous levels. A war that has been going on for more than a decade and is not unrelated to the process of militarization of central and eastern Europe, the spread of military bases and missile systems, the carrying out of military exercises, the expansion of NATO to the borders of the Federation Russian. A war that penalizes the people of the countries directly involved, but also the rest of the people of Europe, whose living conditions and rights are harmed, while it increases the profits of arms, energy and food groups.

On this International Day of Peace, the CPPC also highlights and salutes the resistance of the people and the increase in the number of those who, throughout the world, make their voices heard in defense of the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the easing of international relations, disarmament , the sovereignty of States and the rights of peoples. It is in the expansion of the field of peace that the path to a more peaceful and fair world lies.

The CPPC highlights the «White Window for Peace» initiative, promoted by UNICEF and which is present in several schools in the country, highlighting the importance of education and culture for peace, areas in which the CPPC has been committed in recent years, promoting and participating in hundreds of sessions in schools, fine arts exhibitions, concerts and other initiatives.

In marking the International Day of Peace, the CPPC calls for participation in the day of solidarity with Palestine, which it promotes together with other organizations, between October 2nd and 12th, in various locations across the country, for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the end of the escalation of confrontation and the respect and fulfillment of the national rights of the Palestinian people, with the creation of the State of Palestine, as determined by numerous UN resolutions.

No dia 21 de Setembro, alargar a ação pela paz

Assinalando o Dia Internacional da Paz, instituído pela ONU, que todos os anos se celebra a 21 de Setembro, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) salienta os perigos de guerra que marcam o mundo de hoje e apela ao reforço da mobilização em defesa da paz, do desarmamento, do respeito pelos direitos dos povos.

No Médio Oriente, agrava-se, a cada dia, o genocídio do povo palestiniano na Faixa de Gaza e na Cisjordânia, levado a cabo por Israel: às dezenas de milhares de mortos, feridos, estropiados, órfãos, refugiados (muitos dos quais crianças), somam-se os que são agredidos e expulsos das suas casas por colonos e militares israelitas, os que são presos e torturados. Um massacre que resulta de uma ocupação ilegal que tem décadas e que só é possível graças ao apoio militar, económico e diplomático concedido a Israel pelos EUA, Reino Unido e potências da União Europeia.

No Leste da Europa, prossegue sem fim à vista uma guerra que nunca deveria ter começado e a que urge pôr fim o quanto antes, sob pena de poder escalar para níveis desastrosos. Uma guerra que tem já mais de uma década e que não é alheia ao processo de militarização do centro e Leste da Europa, da disseminação de bases militares e sistemas de mísseis, da realização de exercícios militares, do alargamento da NATO até às fronteiras da Federação Russa. Uma guerra que penaliza os povos dos países diretamente envolvidos, mas também os restantes povos da Europa, prejudicados nas suas condições de vida e nos seus direitos, enquanto engorda os lucros dos grupos do armamento, da energia, da alimentação.

Neste Dia Internacional da Paz, o CPPC realça e sauda também a resistência dos povos e o aumento do número dos que, em todo o mundo, fazem ouvir a sua voz em defesa da solução pacífica dos conflitos, do desanuviamento das relações internacionais, do desarmamento, da soberania dos Estados e dos direitos dos povos. É no alargamento do campo da paz que está o caminho para um mundo mais pacífico e mais justo.

O CPPC destaca a iniciativa «Janela Branca pela Paz», promovida pela UNICEF e que tem expressão em várias escolas do País, realçando a importância da educação e da cultura para a paz, áreas nas quais o CPPC se tem empenhado nos últimos anos, promovendo e participando em centenas de sessões em escolas, exposições de artes plásticas, concertos e outras iniciativas.

Ao assinalar o Dia Internacional da Paz, o CPPC apela à participação na jornada de solidariedade com a Palestina, que promove juntamente com outras organizações, entre 2 e 12 de outubro, em várias localidades do País, por um cessar-fogo imediato e permanente, o fim da escalada de confrontação e o respeito e cumprimento dos direitos nacionais do povo palestiniano, com a criação do Estado da Palestina, como determinam inúmeras resoluções da ONU.
