Thousands of people are mobilising in Portugal to demand a ceasefire in Gaza and in defence of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Between October 11 and 16, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers - Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN) and the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East (MPPM) – in association with dozens of Portuguese organisations –, promoted seven street actions in five cities around the country. During these actions, thousands of people demonstrated in solidarity with the Palestinian people, in defence of Peace, demanding an immediate end to the bombings of the Gaza Strip.

On October 29, in Lisbon, many thousands more took to the streets in defence of Peace, for an independent Palestine, in the eighth solidarity action with the Palestinian people. During the demonstration, banners, signs and flags demanded an immediate end to Israeli bombings, denouncing the great hypocrisy of the US, the European Union and several European governments, including the Portuguese government, which with the rhetoric of “Israel's right to defence ” fuel the conflict and provide cover for war crimes, like the indiscriminate bombings, the imposition and worsening of a cruel blockade and the expulsion of the Palestinian population from their homes and land. The CPPC and other organisations intervened in the demonstration, and a motion was read and adopted that reaffirmed the demands of the demonstration and pointed to the continuation of initiatives in defence of peace and the rights of the Palestinian people.

On November 5, a new demonstration will take place, this time in Porto, where, once again, thousands of Portuguese will show that they are on the side of peace in the Middle East and for the rights of the Palestinian people.

Participants in the Demonstration “Peace in the Middle East - Independent Palestine - No to war! No to massacre!”, promoted by CGTP-IN, CPPC and MPPM, and which had the support of dozens of organisations, demand:

1) The immediate end of the bombings on the Gaza Strip and the massacre of its inhabitants.

This is an urgent demand, of emergency, that must be accompanied by the immediate sending of all necessary humanitarian aid, the reestablishment of the operating conditions of hospitals and medical support centres, and the immediate end of the cruel and inhumane siege of the Gaza Strip, in force for 17 years, and for the end of violence by the armed forces and Israeli settlers against the population of the West Bank.

2) Stop the escalation and spread of war to neighbouring countries and the entire Middle East.

The danger of extending the war is evident. Such a widespread war in the Middle East, a region already so martyred by decades of invasions, aggressions and wars, would be a catastrophe. It has to be stopped before it takes place.

3) That a political process finally begins leading to the creation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, with control of its borders.

At the root of what we are witnessing are decades of Israeli occupation and aggression, decades of denial of the right of the Palestinian people to an independent and sovereign State, as promised by several UN resolutions that have always remained unfulfilled.

There can be no Peace in the Middle East without the recognition of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The demand for the rapid implementation of these rights cannot be postponed.

This is the only way to put an end to the cycle of war, the suffering of the Palestinian people, of the Israeli people and of all the peoples of the Middle East.

Here we are united around these goals and our struggle will not stop.

We salute all those across the country who stand up for peace and the rights of the Palestinian people. We salute all those who participated in the many actions already carried out during these days - in Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Évora and other places - and who will certainly participate in the initiatives already announced for Portalegre, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Setúbal, Baixa da Banheira, Almada, Montijo and Santarém, among many others that are under preparation. We salute the more than 100 men and women from the arts and culture who signed the call to support our Demonstration.

We call on everyone to continue to mobilise and contribute to the growth of a broad movement to end the aggression against Gaza, in solidarity with the Palestinian people and for peace in the Middle East.

A movement that will not give up until the massacre is stopped and which will have a strong expression on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, November 29, particularly with street actions in defence of peace in the Middle East and for the rights of the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, and because until the guns become silent, our voices and our struggle for peace and Palestine will not stop either, we inform and call for mobilisation for a great vigil for the Palestinian people, to be held in Lisbon, on Alameda Afonso Henriques , this coming Friday, November 3, at 18.00, where we will affirm that for every criminal bomb dropped on Gaza, a Palestinian flag of resistance and struggle for peace and justice will be hoisted in Portugal”.

Não à Guerra! Não ao massacre!

Milhares de pessoas mobilizam-se em Portugal pela exigência do cessar-fogo em Gaza e em defesa dos direitos do povo palestiniano.

Entre o 11 e 26 de Outubro, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) a Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses - Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN) e o Movimento Pelos Direitos do Povo Palestino e pela Paz no Médio Oriente (MPPM) – em associação com dezenas de organizações portuguesas –, promoveram sete acções de rua em cinco cidades do País. Nelas, manifestaram já milhares de pessoas em solidariedade com o povo palestiniano, em defesa da Paz, exigindo o fim imediato dos bombardeamentos sobre a Faixa de Gaza.

No dia 29 de Outubro, em Lisboa, muitos outros milhares saíram à rua em defesa da Paz, por uma Palestina independente, na oitava acção de solidariedade com o povo palestiniano. Durante a manifestação, as faixas, pancartas e bandeiras exigiam o fim imediato dos bombardeamentos israelitas, denunciando a profunda hipocrisia dos EUA, da União Europeia e de vários governos europeus, incluindo o governo português, que com a retórica do ”direito de defesa de Israel” alimentam o conflito e dão cobertura a crimes de guerra, como os indiscriminados bombardeamentos, a imposição e agravamento de um cruel bloqueio e a expulsão da população palestiniana das suas casas e terra. O CPPC e outras organizações intervieram na manifestação, tendo sido lida e aprovada uma moção que reafirmou as exigências da manifestação e apontou a continuação de iniciativas em defesa da paz e dos direitos do povo palestiniano.

No próximo dia 5 de novembro, uma nova manifestação terá lugar, desta vez no Porto, onde, novamente, milhares de portugueses mostrarão que estão do lado da paz no Médio Oriente e dos direitos do povo palestiniano.

Moção aprovada na manifestação de 29 de Outubro, em Lisboa

Os participantes na Manifestação “Paz no Médio Oriente - Palestina Independente - Não à guerra! Não ao massacre!”, promovida pela CGTP-IN, CPPC e MPPM, e que contou com a adesão de dezenas de organizações, reclamam:

1) O fim imediato dos bombardeamentos sobre a Faixa de Gaza e do massacre dos seus habitantes.

Esta é a exigência inadiável, de emergência, que tem de ser acompanhada pelo envio imediato de toda a ajuda humanitária necessária, pelo restabelecimento das condições de funcionamento dos hospitais e centros de apoio médico, pelo fim imediato do cruel e desumano cerco à Faixa de Gaza, em vigor desde há 17 anos, e pelo fim da violência das forças armadas e dos colonos israelitas contra a população da Cisjordânia.

2) Que seja cortado o passo à escalada e alastramento da guerra aos países vizinhos e a todo o Médio Oriente.

O perigo de extensão da guerra é evidente. Uma tal guerra generalizada no Médio Oriente, região já tão martirizada por décadas de invasões, agressões e guerras, seria uma catástrofe. É preciso travá-la, antes que se concretize.

3) Que se encete, finalmente, um real processo político conducente à criação dum Estado da Palestina, independente e soberano, com controlo das suas fronteiras.

Na origem daquilo a que assistimos estão décadas de ocupação e agressão israelita, décadas de negação do direito do povo palestiniano a um Estado independente e soberano, como prometido por inúmeras resoluções da ONU que ficaram sempre por cumprir.

Não pode haver Paz no Médio Oriente sem o reconhecimento dos direitos inalienáveis do povo palestiniano. É inadiável a exigência da concretização rápida desses direitos.

Essa é a única forma de pôr fim ao ciclo de guerra, ao sofrimento do povo palestiniano, do povo israelita e de todos os povos do Médio Oriente.

Aqui estamos unidos por tais objectivos e a nossa luta não vai parar.

Saudamos todos aqueles que por todo o País se levantam pela paz e pelos direitos do povo palestiniano. Saudamos todos os que participaram nas muitas acções já realizadas nestes dias - em Lisboa, no Porto, em Braga, em Coimbra, em Évora e outros locais – e que certamente vão participar nas iniciativas já anunciadas para Portalegre, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Setúbal, Baixa da Banheira, Almada, Montijo e Santarém, entre muitas outras que estão em preparação. Saudamos os mais de 100 homens e mulheres das artes e da cultura que subscreveram o apelo de apoio a esta nossa Manifestação.

Apelamos a todos que se continuem a mobilizar e contribuam para a intensificação dum amplo movimento pelo fim da agressão a Gaza, de solidariedade com o povo palestiniano e pela paz no Médio Oriente.

Um movimento que não desistirá de parar o massacre e que terá uma forte expressão em torno do Dia Internacional de Solidariedade com o Povo Palestiniano, dia 29 de Novembro, nomeadamente com acções de rua em defesa da paz no Médio Oriente e pelos direitos do povo palestiniano.

Entretanto, e porque enquanto as armas não se calarem, as nossas vozes e a nossa luta pela paz e pela Palestina também não vão parar, informamos e apelamos à mobilização para uma grande vigília pelo povo palestiniano, a realizar em Lisboa, na Alameda Afonso Henriques, na próxima sexta-feira, dia 3 de Novembro, às 18 horas, onde afirmaremos que por cada bomba criminosa caída em Gaza, nascerá em Portugal uma bandeira palestina de resistência e de luta pela paz e pela justiça”.
