The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) values the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) this Friday, May 24, to order the immediate interruption of Israel's military offensive – which began on May 7 – against the Palestinian city of Rafah.

The ICJ also decided that Israel should keep the Rafah crossing open for the unhindered provision at scale of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance.

This court further ruled that the Israeli authorities must take effective measures to ensure unhindered access to the Gaza Strip for any commission of inquiry, fact-finding mission or other UN bodies to investigate allegations of genocide.

The ICJ notes that after weeks of intensified Israeli military bombardment of the city of Rafah – where more than one million Palestinians fled as a result of Israeli evacuation orders, covering more than three-quarters of the entire territory of the Gaza Strip – on 6 May 2024, Israel ordered the evacuation of nearly 100,000 Palestinians to the AL-Mawasi and Khan Younis areas. The court indicates that the Israeli military offensive against Rafah, which began on May 7, 2024, has caused the displacement of about 800 thousand Palestinians by May 18.

Israel had designated Rafah as a "safe point" for Palestinians to move to from other cities in the Gaza Strip. However, Israel continues to bomb Rafah and has taken military control of the crossing into Egypt.

CPPC appeals to continued calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the urgent provision of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population and the fulfilment of the right of the Palestinian people to an independent, sovereign and viable state on the pre-June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital and the fulfilment of the right of return of refugees, as determined in UN resolutions.

The CPPC calls for participation:

- In the concentration on May 28, in Rossio (Lisbon), at 6 pm, demanding the Portuguese government recognize the state of Palestine.

- In the painting, poetry and music workshop on June 3, in Jardim do Marquês (Porto), at 6:30 pm, in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

- In the march for peace and a Free Palestine! on June 14, from Praça da Batalha to Praceta da Palestina (Porto), at 6:30 pm.

ordena a interrupção imediata da ofensiva militar de Israel contra a cidade palestiniana de Rafah

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) valoriza a decisão do Tribunal Internacional de Justiça (TIJ) de ordenar, esta sexta-feira, dia 24 de Maio, a interrupção imediata da ofensiva militar de Israel – que teve início no passado dia 7 de maio – contra a cidade palestiniana de Rafah.
O TIJ decidiu igualmente que Israel deve manter aberta a passagem de Rafah para o fornecimento sem entraves dos serviços básicos e da assistência humanitária e na medida das necessidades urgentes.
Este Tribunal decidiu ainda que as autoridades israelitas devem tomar medidas eficazes para garantir o acesso à Faixa de Gaza de qualquer comissão de inquérito, missão de apuramento de factos ou outro órgão de investigação mandatado por órgãos competentes das Nações Unidas para investigar alegações de genocídio.
O TIJ constata que após semanas de intensificação dos bombardeamentos militares de Israel contra a cidade de Rafah – para onde mais de um milhão de palestinianos fugiram como resultado das ordens de evacuação israelitas, cobrindo mais de três quartos de todo o território da Faixa de Gaza –, em 6 de maio de 2024, Israel ordenou a evacuação de quase 100.000 palestinianos para as áreas de Al-Mawasi e Khan Younis. O Tribunal aponta que a ofensiva militar israelita contra Rafah, iniciada em 7 de maio de 2024, provocou a deslocação de cerca de 800 mil palestinianos até 18 de maio.
Rafah foi o local que Israel assinalou como dito «ponto seguro» para onde se deveriam deslocar os palestinianos das outras cidades da Faixa de Gaza. No entanto, Israel prossegue a bombardear Rafah e tomou o controlo militar da passagem para o Egipto.
O CPPC apela a que se continuem a levantar as vozes pela exigência do cessar-fogo imediato e permanente, do urgente fornecimento de ajuda humanitária à população palestiniana e do cumprimento do direito do povo palestiniano ao seu Estado independente, soberano e viável, nas fronteiras anteriores a junho de 1967, com Jerusalém Oriental como capital e o cumprimento do direito ao regresso dos refugiados, conforme determinado nas resoluções da ONU.
O CPPC apela à participação:
- Na concentração para exigir ao Governo português que reconheça o Estado da Palestina, que terá lugar no dia 28 de maio, no Rossio, em Lisboa, a partir das 18h00.
- Na oficina de pintura, poesia e música em solidariedade com o povo palestiniano, que terá lugar no dia 3 de Junho, no Jardim do Marquês, no Porto, pelas 18h30.
- Na marcha pela Paz e pela Palestina Livre! Que terá lugar no dia 14 de Junho, da Praça da Batalha até à Praceta da Palestina, no Porto, pelas 18h30.
É urgente o cessar-fogo imediato e permanente!
É urgente a ajuda humanitária à população palestiniana!
O Governo português deve reconhecer o Estado da Palestina!
