76th. anniversary of the victory over Nazi-fascism - Celebrate Victory, Defend Peace!

Tuesday, June 1, 2021

May 9 marks the 76th. anniversary of Victory Day.

After the taking of Berlin by the Red Army on May 2, and with Nazi Germany signalling its unconditional surrender on the 8th., millions of people finally celebrated on May 9, 1945 the end of the deadliest and most destructive war that Humanity has ever known.

More than 50 million people lost their lives in World War II. Among the crimes of Nazi-fascism, the horror of Nazi concentration and extermination camps ranks among the most heinous.

But the history of World War II is above all the history of those who resisted and fought against Nazi-fascist barbarism. For this reason, celebrating Victory Day is paying tribute to the millions of men, women and youth who fought and resisted, giving their lives when necessary, to free Humanity from Nazi-fascist barbarism.

Among these, it is fair to highlight the role of the Soviet people and the Red Army, which, at the cost of more than 20 million deaths and huge sacrifices, decisively changed the course of the war.

As it is fair to highlight the role of the anti-fascist resistance, which bravely fought against the Nazi occupying forces and demonstrated the strength of the unity of the anti-fascists in the struggle for freedom and peace.

It is also important to take into account the role of the Coalition of Allied Countries, which was formed in the course of the war.

Having been born just over a month after the end of the war, the United Nations Charter opens a new era in international relations, of important advances in the right of the peoples to self-determination, in the sovereignty of States, in peace and cooperation, in social progress changing the face of the world.

Despite being disrespected, particularly by Western powers, with wars of aggression or the unilateral imposition of sanctions and blockades against peoples and countries, the United Nations Charter enshrines important principles for the defence of the rights and sovereignty of the peoples.

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation celebrates this date by stressing the importance of continuing to build a world of peace, sovereignty and social progress, which continues to be embraced by millions of men and women, 76 years after the Victory over the Nazi-fascism, defending freedom and peace and saying no to fascism and war.

9 de Maio

76º aniversário da vitória sobre o nazi-fascismo

- Celebrar a Vitória, Defender a Paz!
