In view of the announcement that a large-scale attack by Israeli forces is forthcoming on the Rafah region, where Israeli bombings have already caused the deaths of dozens of Palestinians who sought refuge here, flocking from other areas of the Gaza Strip, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) reaffirms the demand repeated for more than four months: the urgency of an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population. This is the only way to stop the horror that at the hands of Israel has been inflicted on the Palestinian people, causing more than 28 thousand deaths, of which more than 12 thousand are children.

Today, more than a million and a half people are concentrated in Rafah, having sought refuge there in view of the scale of the destruction caused by more than 130 days of brutal Israeli aggression, which does not spare hospitals, schools, residential neighbourhoods, United Nations shelters. and even columns of refugees. As the United Nations has repeatedly denounced, the survival conditions imposed by Israel are inhuman, as they lack everything: from running water to medicines, from shelter to food.

It is important to remember that Rafah, like Khan Younis before it, was announced as a “safe zone” by the Israeli authorities to which the populations of the North of the Gaza Strip should move to escape the bombings, which are now concentrated precisely in Rafah. This shows – and the Israeli political and military leaders themselves do not hide it – what the objective of this aggression was, from the outset: the reoccupation and recolonisation of that Palestinian territory by Israel, murdering or expelling the Palestinian population. An old purpose of the Zionist leaders, which is now being implemented in a brutal way. Israel wants Egypt to "open the doors" for Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip, never to return to their land, from where they would be expelled.

It is important that all those who defend peace raise their voices against this yet another crime by Israel, which is only possible thanks to the support – military, financial, economic and diplomatic – guaranteed by the US, the United Kingdom and countries belonging to the European Union.

It is necessary to increase the demand for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population and the fulfilment of the rights of the Palestinian people to their independent, sovereign and viable state, on the pre-June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and the right of return of the refugees.

The CPPC will continue to declare these demands in the actions it develops and in which it participates. This coming February 14, in Coimbra; on February 16, at 17:30, at the human chain in Viana do Castelo, between the train station and Praça da Liberdade; or on February 19, at 18.00, at the human chain, in Praça do Leões, in Porto – Take part!

Travar a agressão em Rafah e em toda a Faixa de Gaza
- Por um cessar-fogo imediato e permanente

Face ao anúncio de que estará iminente um amplo ataque das forças israelitas à região de Rafah, onde os bombardeamentos israelitas já provocaram a morte de dezenas de palestinianos que, oriundos de outras áreas da Faixa de Gaza, aqui procuraram refúgio, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) reafirma a exigência repetida há mais de quatro meses: a urgência de um cessar-fogo imediato e permanente e o urgente fornecimento de ajuda humanitária à população palestiniana. Esta é a única forma de travar o horror que às mãos de Israel tem sido infligido ao povo palestiniano, provocando mais de 28 mil mortos, dos quais mais de 12 mil são crianças.

Em Rafah concentram-se hoje para cima de um milhão e meio de pessoas, que aí procuraram refúgio face à gravidade da destruição provocada por mais de 130 dias de brutal agressão israelita, que não poupa hospitais, escolas, bairros residenciais, abrigos das Nações Unidas e até mesmo colunas de refugiados. Como as Nações Unidas têm reiteradamente denunciado, as condições de sobrevivência impostas por Israel são desumanas, pois falta de tudo: da água canalizada aos medicamentos, de abrigos a alimentos.

É importante recordar que Rafah, como antes Khan Younis, foi apresentada como «zona segura» pelas autoridades israelitas para a qual as populações do Norte da Faixa de Gaza se deveriam deslocar para fugir dos bombardeamentos, que agora se concentram precisamente em Rafah. Fica assim demonstrado – e os próprios responsáveis políticos e militares israelitas não o escondem – qual é, desde o primeiro momento, o objetivo desta agressão: a reocupação e recolonização daquele território palestiniano por parte de Israel, assassinando ou expulsando a população palestiniana. Um propósito antigo dos dirigentes sionistas, que está agora a ser implementado de forma brutal. Israel tem a intenção de que o Egipto "abra as portas" para que os palestinianos partam da Faixa de Gaza, para nunca mais voltarem à sua terra, de onde seriam expulsos.

Importa que todos quantos defendem a paz ergam a sua voz contra mais este crime de Israel, só possível graças ao apoio – militar, financeiro, económico e diplomático – que lhe garantem os EUA, o Reino Unido e países que integram a União Europeia.

É necessário ampliar a exigência do cessar-fogo imediato e permanente, do urgente fornecimento de ajuda humanitária à população palestiniana e do cumprimento dos direitos do povo palestiniano ao seu Estado independente, soberano e viável, nas fronteiras anteriores a junho de 1967, com Jerusalém Oriental como capital e o direito ao regresso dos refugiados.

O CPPC continuará a afirmar estas exigências nas acções que desenvolve e em que participa.
