This May 9, when we mark the 79th. anniversary of the victory over Nazi-fascism in World War II, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation reaffirms its determination to continue the struggle for peace, disarmament, sovereignty and social progress.

The victory over Nazi-fascism, a particularly aggressive expression of imperialism, opened a liberating and emancipating path in the world, with the construction of new societies of social progress, with the achievement of democratic rights, with the defeat of colonial empires, with the affirmation of the principles of peace, sovereignty, equality and cooperation in international relations.

But imperialism did everything to curb and impose the reversal of this liberating movement and, currently, it seeks by all means to maintain its planetary hegemony. This is how the US withdraws from important agreements on arms control and their reduction; the warmongering escalation in Eastern Europe, including the successive enlargements of NATO targeting Russia; the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip; or the militarisation in Asia-Pacific, where an attempt is made to reproduce as regards China the catastrophic scenario seen in Europe – realities whose dramatic effects and dangers, which the CPPC never tired of warning about, are now in full view.

This consistent state of tension, confrontation and war serves the interests of the arms industry and other economic groups, but it does not serve the peoples – in the first place the peoples who are subject to war, obviously, but also other peoples facing the worsening of their living conditions, the limitation of freedoms and democracy, the spread of xenophobic, racist and militaristic concepts.

Today the international situation today is much different from that which emerged following the victory over Nazi-fascism. But one lesson remains: ultimately, it is the peoples, with their action and struggle in defence of peace, freedoms, rights, and against fascism and war, who write History. Today, in Aveiro, tomorrow, Friday, in Porto, and Saturday, in Lisbon and Torres Novas, we will write two more pages, with actions for Peace in the world, for an independent Palestine, to say no to war!

9 de maio – Comemorar a vitória sobre o nazi-fascismo

Neste 9 de maio, quando se assinala o 79.º aniversário da vitória sobre o nazi-fascismo na Segunda Guerra Mundial, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação reafirma a sua determinação em prosseguir a luta pela paz, o desarmamento, a soberania e o progresso social.

A vitória sobre o nazi-fascismo, expressão particularmente agressiva do imperialismo, abriu no mundo um caminho libertador e emancipador, com a construção de novas sociedades de progresso social, com a conquista de direitos democráticos, com a derrota de impérios coloniais, com a afirmação de princípios de paz, soberania, igualdade e cooperação nas relações internacionais.

Mas o imperialismo tudo fez para suster e impor a inversão deste movimento libertador e, na actualidade, procura por todos os meios manter a sua hegemonia planetária. Assim se compreende a retirada dos EUA de importantes acordos de controlo e redução de armamentos; a escalada belicista no Leste da Europa, incluindo com os sucessivos alargamentos da NATO visando a Rússia; o genocídio em curso na Faixa de Gaza; ou a militarização na Ásia-Pacífico, onde se procura replicar em torno da China o catastrófico cenário que se verifica na Europa – realidades cujos dramáticos efeitos e perigos, para os quais o CPPC não se cansou se alertar, estão hoje à vista.

Este estado permanente de tensão, confrontação e guerra serve os interesses da indústria do armamento e de outros grupos económicos, mas não serve os povos – em primeiro lugar os povos que são sujeitos à guerra, evidentemente, mas também outros povos colocados perante o agravamento das suas condições de vida, a limitação das liberdades e da democracia, a difusão de concepções xenófobos, racistas e militaristas.

A situação internacional é, hoje, muito diferente daquela que emanou da vitória sobre o nazi-fascismo. Mas um ensinamento permanece: em última instância, são os povos, com a sua ação e a sua luta em defesa da paz, das liberdades, dos direitos, e contra o fascismo e a guerra, que escrevem a História. Hoje, em Aveiro, amanhã, sexta-feira, no Porto, e sábado, em Lisboa e em Torres Novas, escreveremos mais duas das suas páginas, com as acções pela Paz no mundo, por uma Palestina independente, para afirmar não à guerra!
