Commemorate the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp

Tuesday, February 14, 2023

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) marks January 27 of 1945, the date of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet army, remembering and paying tribute to all those who suffered at the hands of Nazi-fascism during
World War II.

To mark this date is to remember all those - many millions - who, for their political or religious convictions, their ethnicity or sexual orientation, were brutally persecuted, tortured and murdered by Nazi-fascist barbarism, namely in its concentration and extermination
camps - 60 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, in 2005, the United Nations established this date as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust.

To mark this date is to remember all those - many millions - who bravely and heroically resisted until victory over Nazi-fascism, liberating humanity.

To mark this date is to counter the attempts to rewrite history, which seek to whitewash Nazi-fascism, hide or trivialize its heinous crimes. Look at how in some countries those who collaborated with the Nazi-fascist hordes are glorified, while monuments and other
symbols that remember and honor those who resisted them are demolished.

On this date it is necessary to affirm that the horror of Nazi-fascism and its brutal atrocities must never be repeated! It is necessary to affirm: fascism never again!

We live in times where the unacceptable promotion of disinformation and manipulation, the apology of war, xenophobia, hatred, far-right and fascist forces, with their obscurantist, retrograde and anti-democratic ideas, of dangerous attacks on freedoms, rights, and
democracy, is taking place.

Several conflicts persist in the world, the instigation of confrontation and war, with the serious risk of its worsening, which may have increased and more serious consequences for all humanity, calling into question the right of peoples to live in peace.
Therefore, to commemorate the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp is also to reaffirm the defense of peace, not forgetting those who gave their lives to conquer and defend it.

Defending freedom and peace requires a permanent fight against fascism, militarism, and war - a commitment that the CPPC has always had, and which we renew on this day, acting side by side with all those who aspire to a better world, of peace and social progress.
