The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) strongly repudiates the new veto of the United States of America on the proposed resolution presented by Algeria at the Security Council of the United Nations, on February 20, which called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the proposed resolution called for all parties to respect and provide full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population, and opposed a forced displacement of the Palestinian population.
This is the sixth time that the US has prevented the adoption of a resolution in the UN Security Council to end Israel's aggression against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, having previously vetoed three proposed resolutions presented by Russia, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, and blocked two other proposed resolutions presented by Russia.

In this way the US continues to display its complicity with the massacre that Israel has been committing in the Gaza Strip for four months, having already caused around 30 thousand deaths, of which more than 12 thousand are children, and almost 70 thousand injured among the Palestinian population. In addition to the massacre, Israel continues to methodically destroy hospitals, schools, homes or places of worship and impose a blockade that aims to deprive the Palestinian population of water, food, medicine, electricity, fuel and shelter.
​The malnutrition and hunger that are acutely felt in the Gaza Strip are used by Israel as a weapon of war to achieve its objective: to reoccupy the Gaza Strip, murdering and expelling the Palestinian population.
The fact that this US veto is imposed at a time when Israel announces a large-scale attack against the city of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, next to the border with Egypt, where more than one million and 400 thousand people are now concentrated, can only be seen as support for Israel's genocidal policy and the crimes it commits and intends to continue committing.

It is worth remembering that Israel is one of the largest beneficiaries of US military support and that many of the weapons used against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip are US-made.
The CPPC, which today carried out actions to explain and denounce the dramatic situation in Palestine, reaffirms what are the fundamental demands to stop the massacre of the Palestinian people and put an end to a conflict that has affected the Middle East for decades:

an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
the unrestricted entry of urgent and necessary humanitarian aid.
the reconstruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
the creation of the independent, sovereign and viable State of Palestine within the borders prior to June 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem, and the fulfilment of the right of return of Palestinian refugees, as determined by UN resolutions.

The CPPC will continue to fight, and mobilise others, for this important cause, indispensable for peace in the Middle East and in the world, a peace that will only be lasting if it is fair, based on the inalienable rights of the peoples and respect for international law.

EUA continuam a vetar um cessar-fogo na Faixa de Gaza
- É urgente pôr fim ao massacre do povo palestino!

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) repudia veementemente o novo veto dos Estados Unidos da América à proposta de resolução apresentada pela Argélia no Conselho de Segurança da Organização das Nações Unidas, no passado dia 20 de fevereiro, que instava a um cessar-fogo imediato na Faixa de Gaza.
Para além de um cessar-fogo humanitário imediato na Faixa de Gaza, a proposta de resolução apelava a que todas as partes deveriam respeitar e a uma ajuda humanitária plena, rápida, segura e sem entraves à população palestiniana, e opunha-se à deslocação forçada da população palestiniana.
Esta é a sexta vez que os EUA impedem a adoção de uma resolução no Conselho de Segurança da ONU para acabar com a agressão de Israel contra a população palestiniana na Faixa de Gaza, tendo anteriormente vetado três propostas de resolução apresentados pela Rússia, Brasil e Emirados Árabes Unidos, e bloqueado duas outras propostas de resolução apresentadas pela Rússia.
Os EUA continuam desta forma a demonstrar a sua cumplicidade com o massacre que desde há quatro meses Israel comete na Faixa de Gaza, tendo já provocado cerca de 30 mil mortos, dos quais mais de 12 mil são crianças, e quase 70 mil feridos na população palestiniana. Para além da chacina, Israel continua a destruir metodicamente hospitais, escolas, habitações ou locais de culto religioso e a impor um bloqueio que visa privar a população palestiniana de água, alimentos, medicamentos, eletricidade, combustíveis, abrigos.
A subnutrição e a fome que se fazem sentir de modo agudo na Faixa de Gaza é usada por Israel como arma de guerra para concretizar aquele que é o seu objetivo: reocupar a Faixa de Gaza, assassinando e expulsando a população palestiniana.
O facto deste veto dos EUA ser imposto no momento em que Israel anuncia um ataque de larga escala contra a cidade de Rafah, no sul da Faixa de Gaza, junto à fronteira com o Egipto, onde se concentram hoje mais de um milhão e 400 mil pessoas, só pode ser entendido como um apoio à política genocida de Israel e aos crimes que comete e pretende continuar a cometer.
Importa recordar que Israel é um dos maiores beneficiários de apoio militar dos EUA e que são norte-americanas muitas das armas utilizadas contra a população palestiniana na Faixa de Gaza.
O CPPC, que realizou ontem ações de esclarecimento e denúncia sobre a dramática situação que se vive na Palestina, reafirma aquelas que são as exigências fundamentais para travar o massacre do povo palestiniano e pôr fim a um conflito que há décadas afeta o Médio Oriente:
-um cessar-fogo imediato e permanente.
-a entrada sem limitações da urgente e necessária ajuda humanitária.
-a reconstrução das infraestruturas na Faixa de Gaza.
-a criação do Estado da Palestina independente, soberano e viável nas fronteiras anteriores a junho de 1967, com capital em Jerusalém Oriental, e o cumprimento do direito ao regresso dos refugiados palestinianos, como determinam as resoluções da ONU.
O CPPC continuará a bater-se, e a mobilizar outros, para esta importante causa, indispensável à paz no Médio Oriente e no mundo, uma paz que só será duradoura se for justa, baseada nos direitos inalienáveis dos povos e no respeito pelo direito internacional.
