World Day of Action in Solidarity with Venezuela! - End to US aggression! - Respect the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people!

Thursday, May 14, 2020

Today, April 19, marks the World Day of Solidarity with Venezuela, which celebrates the beginning of the struggle for independence from the Spanish colonial yoke, in 1810, led by Simón Bolívar.
Today, 210 years ago, the struggle for affirmation of national sovereignty and independence of Venezuela, together with the social progress of its people, not only continues as it is a particularly important moment.

This day is being commemorated in a complex situation for the people of the world due to pandemic Covid-19. In Venezuela, public health measures promptly taken by the Bolivarian authorities, and the support of Cuban medical teams, have prevented and combated the disease, achieving especially low rates of contagion and mortality.

However, deficiencies remain due to the criminal sanctions and blockages imposed by the US administration that try to prevent at all costs the purchase of medical equipment and medicines by the Venezuelan authorities, who seek to respond and meet the needs, ensuring the right to health of the Venezuelan people.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, together with seven other countries that are victims of blockades and sanctions, urged the United Nations Secretary-General to take firm and determined action to lift all unilateral coercive measures imposed by the USA and its allies - in disrespect of the Charter of the United Nations and international law - against other countries, allowing, with the end of these measures, a more effective fight against the pandemic.

The sanctions and blockades imposed by the USA are a real crime that aims to stifle the economy and prevent the response to the most basic needs of peoples, including their rights to health, food, and a decent life.

In this regard, it is important to remember that, in the face of the Covid-19 outbreak, the American administration reveals a total disregard for human life, be it Venezuelan, American or of another nationality: the absence of effective responses in its own country, the theft of masks and ventilator from other countries, attempts to control possible vaccines and, more recently, the announcement of an interruption of the financial contribution to the World Health Organization reveal the inhuman and predatory nature of the American power system.

It is precisely in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic that the Trump administration decided to move a powerful US military contingent to the borders of Venezuela, in the Caribbean Sea, threatening the Venezuelan people with military aggression and the world with yet another war.

We recall that the Trump Administration approved a so-called transition plan for Venezuela - supported by its puppet, the more than discredited Juan Guaidó, by their servants in the region and the European Union - which is nothing more than a new attempted coup d'état to impose a government subservient to US interests – a plan that affronts the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people and the Constitution of Venezuela and aims to seize the immense wealth of the country.

There is a long history of US interference, blackmail, threat and aggression against the Venezuelan people and the Bolivarian Revolution, beginning in 1999, following the victory of Commander Hugo Chávez in the presidential elections of the previous year.

The path of sovereignty and social progress then started, for benefit of the vast majority of Venezuelans and for mutually advantageous cooperation between the countries of Latin America, called into question the interests of the United States of America and the Venezuelan oligarchy at its service - precisely, those that for decades plundered Venezuela and its oil reserves.

On World Day of Action in Solidarity with Venezuela!, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to the principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and in the United Nations Charter:

- Demands an immediate end to interference, sanctions, blockades and blackmail by the United States and its followers against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Venezuelan people;

- Demands the immediate return of financial resources owned by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela illegally retained by the United States at international banks, such as Novo Banco, in Portugal;

- Demands an immediate end to the threats of US military aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Venezuelan people;

And also in respect for those same principles,

- Demands that the Portuguese Government abandon its unacceptable stance following the dictates of the USA, which violates the rights and sovereignty of the Venezuelan people and goes against the interests of the Portuguese people, including the Portuguese community living in Venezuela.

Dia Mundial de Solidariedade com a Venezuela
Fim à agressão dos EUA!
Respeitar a soberania do povo venezuelano!

- Exige o fim imediato da ingerência, das sanções e bloqueio, da chantagem dos EUA, e seus seguidores, contra a República Bolivariana da Venezuela e o povo venezuelano;

- Exige a imediata devolução dos recursos financeiros propriedade da República Bolivariana da Venezuela retidos ilegalmente por exigência dos EUA em bancos internacionais, como no Novo Banco, em Portugal;

- Exige o fim imediato das ameaças de agressão militar dos EUA contra a República Bolivariana da Venezuela e o povo venezuelano;
