In light of the government's recent statements regarding a possible recognition of the State of Palestine, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) reaffirms its long-standing demand: this recognition must be made immediately, without conditionality, and must correspond to the recognition of a viable and sovereign Palestinian State within the pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital, as determined by international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Besides the lack of guarantees regarding this decision, the postponement of a potential recognition of Palestine until September, when the UN General Assembly is held, is inconceivable and does not correspond to the urgency of affirming the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people.

The CPPC considers it particularly serious that the Portuguese government has not condemned the genocide that Israel has been carrying out since October 2023, its successive massacres and acts of terrorism, and its disregard for and trampling on international law.

The Portuguese government is required to comply with the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, which provides not only for the right to self-determination of peoples but also for the abolition of imperialism, colonialism, and any other forms of aggression, domination, and exploitation in relations between peoples.

The CPPC once again demands that the Portuguese government not wait and unconditionally and immediately recognize the State of Palestine – as 147 countries have already done.

The CPPC calls for the continuation and strengthening of the solidarity movement, demanding the recognition of the State of Palestine, an end to the genocide, and an end to the intensification of violence and occupation in the West Bank, which are crucial for peace and justice in Palestine and the Middle East region.

Pelo reconhecimento do Estado da Palestina

Face às recentes declarações do governo sobre um eventual reconhecimento do Estado da Palestina, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) reafirma a sua exigência de sempre: este reconhecimento deve ser feito no imediato, sem condicionalismos e deve corresponder ao reconhecimento de um Estado Palestiniano viável e soberano, nas fronteiras anteriores a 1967 e com Jerusalém Oriental como capital, conforme determinam o direito internacional e as relevantes resoluções das Nações Unidas.
Para além de não haver garantias quanto a esta decisão, o adiamento para Setembro, aquando da realização da Assembleia Geral da ONU, para um potencial reconhecimento da Palestina é inconcebível e não corresponde à urgência de afirmação dos inalienáveis direitos nacionais do povo palestiniano.
O CPPC considera particularmente grave que sobre o genocídio que Israel mantém em curso desde outubro de 2023, sobre os seus sucessivos massacres e atos de terrorismo, sobre o desrespeito e espezinhamento do direito internacional, nem uma palavra de condenação do governo português.
Exige-se, do governo português, o cumprimento da Constituição da República Portuguesa que prevê não só o direito à autodeterminação dos povos mas também a abolição do imperialismo, do colonialismo e de quaisquer outras formas de agressão, domínio e exploração nas relações entre os povos.
O CPPC volta a exigir que o governo português não fique à espera, e reconheça, de forma incondicional e imediata o Estado da Palestina – tal como já fizeram 147 países.
O CPPC apela ao prosseguimento e reforço do movimento de solidariedade, de exigência do reconhecimento do Estado da Palestina, do fim do genocídio, do fim da intensificação da violência e ocupação na Cisjordânia, determinantes para a paz e a justiça na Palestina e na região do Médio Oriente.
