End aggression against Syria - Peace is urgent!

Saturday, May 15, 2021

Ten years have gone by since the first provocations and confrontations with which, in March 2011, the operation of destabilisation and aggression aimed to overthrow the Syrian government. As was the case shortly before in Libya, the main Western powers and their regional allies, hiding behind terrorist groups, they themselves created, armed, trained and funded, imposed the aggression and destruction of Syria, in order to change the political-constitutional regime of the country, with the aim of exploiting its natural resources and removing one of the main hurdles to the full domination of the region.

The result is tens of thousands of dead and injured, millions of displaced persons and refugees; incalculable economic, material and property damage; severe economic and social problems not only due to weapons, but also due to the violent sanctions and blockades imposed by Western powers - as a punishment for the Syrian people, in the face of their resistance - even in a pandemic situation.

The military aggression was, and continues to be, accompanied by a no less fierce media war, with lies and unfounded accusations against the Syrian authorities, of perpetrating chemical attacks against its population, whose only aim was to justify a direct military offensive by the US and its NATO allies, such as the United Kingdom or France. A tale also recently repeated without shame by the current Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres.

But contrary to what happened in Libya, the aggressors did not achieve their objectives: not only did the Syrian people, organised around patriotic forces and the Syrian Arab Army, manage to resist the aggression, having counted on the support of various allies, but have already succeeded in freeing a large part of the territory from terrorist groups linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State and different branches of Al-Qaeda and to start rebuilding the country.

However, still remain under illegal external occupation - namely by US, Israeli and Turkish military forces - territories in Syria, namely those with the biggest oil deposits, with frequent bombings by Israel, and recently also by the US against Syrian territory, and the attacks by Turkish military forces, always in support of the terrorist groups that the US, NATO, the EU and their allies claim they are fighting.

In 2011, when the aggression started, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation denounced the instrumentalization, from abroad, of Syria's internal problems, to foment destabilisation and promote conflict, economic and political blockade and pave the way for a direct military aggression, which only did not materialise to a greater scale thanks to the combativeness shown by the Syrian military and patriotic forces and their allies in resisting aggression, terrorism and interference.

Today, as 10 years ago, it is fundamental to demand:

- the withdrawal of all foreign forces illegally occupying Syrian territories and an end to support for terrorist groups operating there.

- the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria and its people, sanctions that are all the more inhumane when at the moment they undermine the fight against the pandemic.

- respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian people, the independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Only the Syrian people are responsible for deciding their path, free from foreign interference. This is the path that serves peace in Syria and in the martyred region of the Middle East, which prevents new waves of refugees and respect for the United Nations Charter and International Law.

The CPPC reaffirms the demand that the Portuguese Government abandon its subordinate and sheepish position in the face of the criminal policy of the United States of America, NATO and the European Union and assume a position consistent with the principles of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, which enshrines a policy based on peace, respect for the sovereignty of States, non-interference, cooperation with all peoples and which advocates the abolition of all forms of aggression in international relations.

Fim à agressão contra a Síria

- a paz é urgente!

- da retirada de todas as forças estrangeiras que ocupam ilegalmente territórios da Síria e o fim do apoio aos grupos terroristas que daí operam;

- do levantamento das sanções impostas à Síria e ao seu povo, sanções tanto mais desumanas quando neste momento prejudicam o combate à pandemia;
