The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) vehemently repudiates the serious acts of provocation and grave threats made by the US administration, presided over by Trump, against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Republic of Colombia, and other States of Latin America and the Caribbean, such as Cuba, Brazil, and Mexico. In addition to the unacceptable threats directed at the heads of state of Venezuela and Colombia, respectively Nicolás Maduro and Gustavo Petro, and the blatant assertion by US President Trump that interference and destabilization maneuvers are underway against Venezuela, which he himself allegedly authorized, including with the use of the CIA, the sending of US warships and other military assets to the Caribbean Sea and the crimes committed against vessels, notably those of fishermen, which resulted in several fatalities, stand out.

The CPPC denounces the attempts to trivialize and normalize such unacceptable acts of provocation, threats, and intentions pursued by the US, which blatantly violate the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law. The CPPC recalls that the interventionism and aggression carried out by the US against the Bolivarian Revolution, and the progress achieved by the Venezuelan people and the example it represents of the firm defense of sovereignty and rights for the Latin American and Caribbean peoples and for the peoples of the whole world, are not new, nor are they exclusive to this US administration. What the US wants is to seize, once again, the immense natural resources of Venezuela, a country that has the largest oil reserves in the world and is rich in natural gas, gold, fresh water, and various rare minerals of great industrial use. It is this, and not any false and hypocritical concerns about "democracy" or "drug trafficking," that motivates the US with regard to Venezuela and other Latin American countries.

The serious threat of direct US military aggression against Venezuela, as presented today, follows the intention to subvert the Venezuelan constitutional order through successive coup attempts, the imposition of a strict economic blockade, the theft of Venezuelan assets abroad, and the farcical recognition of a puppet “president,” Guaidó, linked to the far right, the oligarchy, and US interests. Corina Machado, who was awarded the long-discredited Nobel Peace Prize – an award objectively associated with the aggression against Venezuela – is also part of these purposes. Appearing as the leader of the Venezuelan coup-plotting far right, subordinate to the US – particularly Trump, to whom she dedicates the prize – Corina Machado advocates the application of coercive measures and external military intervention against the Venezuelan people and, among other examples of her actions, publicly supports Netanyahu and his policy of occupation, colonization, and aggression. It was this same oligarchy that for decades – until Hugo Chávez's first electoral victory in 1998 – deprived the overwhelming majority of Venezuelans of the most basic rights (housing, health, education, social protection, work with rights) and used the large income associated with oil to create a parasitic ruling class deeply subordinate to the US, responsible for more than 80% of the Venezuelan population living in poverty. The brutal economic and social effects of the US economic blockade belie any supposed concern for the Venezuelan people, the main victims of the shortages caused by the blockade.

The threats against Venezuela and Colombia, the intensification of the blockade against Cuba, the coercive measures against Nicaragua, or the economic and political pressures and measures against Brazil, Mexico, and other countries, reveal the US's intentions to try to prevent the assertion of sovereignty and the right to development of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples.

The US wants Latin America and the Caribbean to be its “backyard” so that it can impose its dominance over the region and plunder its rich resources. To that end, over decades, the US has carried out military interventions, as well as coups d'état – as in Chile, Brazil, or Venezuela – and supported brutal fascist military dictatorships responsible for the murder of many thousands of democrats. The CPPC calls for solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela, the Venezuelan people, the Colombian people, the Cuban people, and in general with the Latin American and Caribbean peoples who defend their sovereignty and rights, including the right to peace, in the face of US interference and aggression. It is up to the people to decide their destinies and enjoy their resources for the benefit of their well-being and the progress of their countries.

Defender a paz e a soberania
A América Latina não é o “quintal” dos EUA

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) repudia veementemente os graves atos de provocação e as sérias ameaças levados a cabo pela administração norte-americana, presidida por Trump, contra a República Bolivariana da Venezuela, a República da Colômbia e outros Estados da América Latina e Caraíbas, como Cuba, o Brasil ou o México.
Para além das inadmissíveis ameaças dirigidas aos chefes de Estado da Venezuela e da Colômbia, respectivamente Nicolás Maduro e Gustavo Petro, e da descarada afirmação do presidente dos EUA, Trump, de que estão em curso manobras de ingerência e desestabilização contra a Venezuela, que o próprio terá autorizado, incluindo com o recurso à CIA, sobressai o envio de navios de guerra e outros meios militares norte-americanos para o Mar das Caraíbas e os crimes cometidos contra embarcações, nomeadamente de pescadores, de que resultaram várias vítimas mortais.
O CPPC denuncia as tentativas de banalização e normalização de tais inaceitáveis atos de provocação, ameaças e intenções prosseguidas pelos EUA, que violam descaradamente os princípios da Carta das Nações Unidas e o direito internacional.
O CPPC lembra que não é de hoje, nem apenas desta administração norte-americana, o intervencionismo e a agressão que os EUA levam a cabo contra a Revolução bolivariana, o que esta significa de avanços conquistados para o povo venezuelano e exemplo que representa de firme defesa de soberania e de direitos para os povos latino-americanos e caribenhos e para os povos de todo o mundo.
O que os EUA pretendem é apoderarem-se, de novo, dos imensos recursos naturais da Venezuela, país que tem as maiores reservas de petróleo do mundo e é rico em gás natural, ouro, água doce e diversos minerais raros de grande utilização industrial.
É isto, e não quaisquer falsas e hipócritas preocupações com a “democracia” ou o “narcotráfico”, que move os EUA no que concerne à Venezuela e aos outros países da América Latina.
A séria ameaça de agressão militar direta dos EUA contra a Venezuela, hoje colocada, segue-se à intenção de subverter a ordem constitucional venezuelana através de sucessivas tentativas de golpe de Estado, à imposição de um férreo bloqueio económico, ao roubo de activos venezuelanos no exterior, ao caricato reconhecimento de um “presidente” fantoche, Guaidó, ligado à extrema-direita, à oligarquia e aos interesses norte-americanos.
Corina Machado, a quem foi atribuído o há muito desacreditado Prémio Nobel da Paz – atribuição que objectivamente se associa à operação de agressão à Venezuela –, insere-se igualmente nestes propósitos. Aparecendo como a dirigente da extrema-direita golpista venezuelana, subordinada aos EUA – particularmente a Trump, a quem dedica o prémio –, Corina Machado defende a aplicação de medidas coercivas e a intervenção militar externa contra o povo venezuelano e, entre outros exemplos da sua acção, assume público apoio a Netanyahu e à sua política de ocupação, colonização e agressão.
Foi esta mesma oligarquia que durante décadas – até à primeira vitória eleitoral de Hugo Chávez, em 1998 – privou a esmagadora maioria dos venezuelanos dos mais elementares direitos (habitação, saúde, educação, proteção social, trabalho com direitos) e utilizou os avultados rendimentos associados ao petróleo para a criação de uma classe dirigente parasitária e profundamente subordinada aos EUA, responsável por mais de 80% da população venezuelana viver na pobreza.
Os brutais efeitos económicos e sociais do cerco económico dos EUA desmentem qualquer pretensa preocupação com o povo venezuelano, principal afetado pelas carências provocadas pelo bloqueio.
As ameaças contra a Venezuela e a Colômbia, a intensificação do bloqueio contra Cuba, as medidas coercivas contra a Nicarágua ou as pressões e as medidas económicas e políticas contra o Brasil, o México e outros países, revelam as intenções dos EUA de tentarem impedir a afirmação da soberania e o direito ao desenvolvimento dos povos latino-americanos e caribenhos.
Os EUA querem que a América Latina e as Caraíbas sejam o seu “quintal”, para que possam impor o domínio sobre esta região, bem como saquear os seus ricos recursos. Para tal e ao longo de décadas, os EUA levaram a cabo intervenções militares, assim como golpes de Estado – como no Chile, no Brasil ou na Venezuela – e sustentaram brutais ditaduras militares fascistas, responsáveis pelo assassinato de muitos milhares de democratas.
O CPPC apela à solidariedade com a Venezuela bolivariana, o povo venezuelano, o povo colombiano, o povo cubano e em geral com os povos latino-americanos e caribenhos que defendem a sua soberania e direitos, incluindo o direito à Paz, face à ingerência e à agressão dos EUA.
Cabe aos povos decidirem dos seus destinos e usufruírem dos seus recursos em benefício do seu bem-estar e do progresso dos seus países.
