Stop the genocide! Free Palestine! Actions in Lisbon and Porto
In Lisbon, on the afternoon of Saturday the 10th, the colors of Palestine waved: the black, green, red, and white of the flag of that desired free and independent state, the blue of the CPPC banners, and the multiple shades of all the organizations that participated in the demonstration "End the genocide! End the occupation! Solidarity with Palestine!".
Along the route that connected Largo Camões to the end of Rua do Carmo, right next to Rossio, the slogans demanding peace, an end to the occupation and massacres, and the fulfillment of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people did not cease - and denouncing the complicity of the USA, the EU, and the Portuguese Government. Slogans that ensured that solidarity will continue until Palestine is free!
Presented by the young actor Rafael Balão, who among other shows performed "My name is Rachel Corrie" (an evocation of the American activist murdered by Israel), the initiative included several interventions. Julieta Almeida, from Parents for Peace, recalled the murder of thousands of Palestinian children - just like our own; Alan Stoleroff, from Jews for Peace and Justice, rejected the idea that it was a religious problem, but rather one of occupation, extermination and apartheid. The author Filipe Homem Fonseca called for the continuation and intensification of solidarity. And Serenah Sabat, a Palestinian resident in Portugal, recounted the suffering of her people - Muslims, Christians (like her) or atheists - at the hands of the occupying forces.
Actress Maria João Luís read the statement from the four organizations promoting the action - CPPC, CGTP-IN, MPPM and Projeto Ruído -, in which principles and demands were reaffirmed:
"Demanding an end to the occupation, an end to the settlements and violence against the Palestinian people, an end to the attacks and a guarantee of unrestricted humanitarian aid, is to affirm that we do not accept that, from Palestine to Cuba, anyone can dictate the rules according to their unacceptable purposes of domination and condition the existence of entire peoples. We condemn the genocide carried out by Israel, only possible with the support of the United States of America and the connivance of the European Union, including the Portuguese government. Support that allows Israel to continue to be the greatest threat to peace in the Middle East, as evidenced by the continued and illegal occupation of territories in Syria and Lebanon or the aggression against Iran."
At the end of this intense solidarity action, an appeal was made for participation in the decentralized national demonstration called by the CGTP-IN for October 17th in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra - where demands for peace, disarmament, cooperation and solidarity with the peoples will also be heard.
The day before, October 9th, a public screening of the film NAZA took place, promoted by the CPPC, CGTP-IN, MPPM and Projeto Ruído, where Rui Pereira, from the presidency of the CPPC, spoke.
After the film, the participants and others who joined them were present at a vigil in Humberto Delgado Square, in solidarity with the Palestinian people, against genocide and occupation.
