The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) denounces and rejects the possibility of national territory being used again for interference and aggression against other States and peoples – let us recall the invasion of Iraq, whose war summit was held at Lajes Air Base, with the assistance of Durão Barroso – and demands a firm stance from the Government against the use of Lajes Air Base for a US military aggression against Iran.

There has been intense movement of US military aircraft at Lajes Air Base, located on Terceira Island, in the Azores, which all indications suggest is related to preparations for a US military aggression targeting Iran.

The subservient position taken on behalf of the Portuguese Government by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, is profoundly contrary to the principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, to the defense of peace, and to the interests of the Portuguese people.

By emphasizing that any US military operation involving that military base “does not have to be authorized, known, or communicated” to Portugal, as this is “written in the treaties,” the Portuguese Government is not only accepting the use of national territory as a platform for military aggression against other countries and peoples, but also associating Portugal with this aggression subordinating the country to the belligerent action promoted by the Trump Administration, which, as reality is showing, is the main threat to international peace and security.

This position of the Portuguese Government, through the voice of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, follows others, equally revealing of a vassalage posture, which ties Portugal to the militaristic and belligerent intentions of the US – such as the recent cases of tacit support given to the US military aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the kidnapping of its President, Nicolás Maduro, earlier this year, and the silence in the face of the criminal aggravation of the blockade imposed by US imperialism against Cuba.

The CPPC considers that Portugal needs to have a foreign policy that fulfills the principles enshrined in the Constitution, among others: the defense of national sovereignty and independence, peace and the rights of peoples, including self-determination, the peaceful resolution of international conflicts, disarmament or the dissolution of political-military blocs.

Portugal não deve continuar a ser usado como plataforma para a ingerência e a agressão a outros povos

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) denuncia e rejeita que o território nacional possa de novo ser utilizado para a ingerência e a agressão contra outros Estados e povos – recordemos a invasão do Iraque, cuja cimeira da guerra foi realizada na Base das Lajes, com a serventia de Durão Barroso – e exige do Governo uma posição firme contra a utilização da Base das Lajes para uma agressão militar dos EUA contra o Irão.
Tem-se verificado um intenso movimento de aeronaves militares dos EUA na Base das Lajes, situada na Ilha Terceira, nos Açores, que tudo aponta estar relacionado com os preparativos para uma agressão militar dos EUA visando o Irão.
A subserviente posição assumida em nome do Governo português pelo ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, Paulo Rangel, é profundamente contrária aos princípios inscritos na Constituição da República Portuguesa, à defesa da paz, aos interesses do povo português. Ao salientar que qualquer operação militar dos EUA envolvendo aquela base militar “não tem de ser nem autorizada, nem conhecida, nem comunicada” a Portugal, por ser isso que está “inscrito nos tratados”, o Governo português não está apenas a aceitar a utilização do território nacional como plataforma para a agressão militar a outros países e povos, como associa Portugal a esta agressão, subordinando o País à acção belicista promovida pela Administração Trump que, como a realidade está a mostrar, é a principal ameaça à paz e à segurança internacional.
Esta posição do Governo português, pela voz do seu ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, vem no seguimento de outras, igualmente reveladoras de uma postura de vassalagem, que amarra Portugal às intenções militaristas e belicistas dos EUA – como são os recentes casos do apoio tácito dado à agressão militar dos EUA à República Bolivariana da Venezuela e ao sequestro do seu Presidente, Nicolás Maduro, no início deste ano, e do silêncio perante o criminoso agravamento do bloqueio imposto pelo imperialismo norte-americano contra Cuba.
Para o CPPC, Portugal precisa de ter uma política externa que cumpra os princípios que a Constituição consagra, entre outros: a defesa da soberania e independência nacional, da paz e dos direitos dos povos, incluindo à autodeterminação, da resolução pacífica dos conflitos internacionais, do desarmamento ou da dissolução dos blocos político-militares.
