“The urgency of the struggle for peace today” was the theme of the debate held on Wednesday, September 24, at Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon. Launching the topic were CPPC leader Isabel Camarinha, Casa do Alentejo president Manuel Verdugo, and Major General Agostinho Costa.
Isabel Camarinha highlighted the CPPC's long and committed work in favor of peace, the political solution of conflicts, disarmament, and solidarity with peoples who are victims of aggression and blockades. She highlighted the ongoing solidarity campaigns with Palestine – against genocide and occupation – and with Cuba – against the blockade – and reaffirmed the need to broaden the denunciation of the interests hidden behind war to more sectors and to understand that war and the arms race affect the rights and living conditions of workers and peoples.

Manuel Verdugo showed the large audience a painting that was offered by the Palestinian diplomatic representation to the Casa do Alentejo, for the support it has always given to the struggle of its people, starting with the cession of the room for the realization of initiatives. The head of the institution listed a wide range of aggressions by the United States against countries and peoples – from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.

Major General Agostinho Costa warned of the risks of war in Europe, calling for mobilization against this possibility. No one emerges victorious from a nuclear war, he reaffirmed. The military expert recalled the entire process that led to the current war in Ukraine, guaranteeing that the US achieved 50% of the objectives it had for this conflict: while it is true that they did not defeat Russia (which, Agostinho Costa assures, is not possible), they subjugated the European Union, which is now irrelevant at the political and geostrategic level.
Several questions arose from the audience, particularly regarding the interests that lie behind a European Union policy that aligns with warmongering interests, and it was also emphasized that someone benefits, and greatly, from the war.
The defense of peace, at this moment in which we live, is a central battle to safeguard the rights, freedoms, living conditions of peoples, and the very survival of Humanity. From there came the commitment to increase mobilization in defense of peace, disarmament, and a more just world.

Debate em Lisboa reafirma compromisso de alargamento da luta em defesa da paz

“A urgência da luta pela paz na actualidade” foi o mote do debate realizado na quarta-feira, 24 de Setembro, na Casa do Alentejo em Lisboa. A lançar o tema estiveram a dirigente do CPPC Isabel Camarinha, o presidente da Casa do Alentejo Manuel Verdugo e o major-general Agostinho Costa.
Isabel Camarinha destacou a longa e empenhada ação do CPPC em prol da paz, da solução política dos conflitos, do desarmamento e da solidariedade aos povos vítimas de agressão e bloqueios. Destacou as campanhas de solidariedade em curso, com a Palestina – contra o genocídio e a ocupação – e com Cuba – contra o bloqueio –, e reafirmou a necessidade de alargar a mais setores a denúncia dos interesses que se escondem por detrás da guerra e a compreensão de que a guerra e a corrida aos armamentos afetam os direitos e condições de vida dos trabalhadores e dos povos.
Manuel Verdugo mostrou à numerosa assistência uma pintura que foi oferecida pela representação diplomática da Palestina à Casa do Alentejo, pelo apoio que sempre tem dado à luta do seu povo, desde logo através da cedência da sala para a realização de iniciativas. O dirigente da instituição enumerou um vasto conjunto de agressões dos Estados Unidos contra países e povos – desde o início do século XX até aos dias de hoje.
O major-general Agostinho Costa alertou para os riscos de guerra na Europa, apelando à mobilização contra esta possibilidade. De uma guerra nuclear ninguém sai vencedor, reafirmou. O especialista militar lembrou todo o processo de conduziu à presente guerra na Ucrânia, garantindo que os EUA atingiram 50% dos objetivos que tinham para este conflito: se é certo que não derrotaram a Rússia (o que, garante Agostinho Costa, não é possível), subjugaram a União Europeia, que é hoje irrelevante ao nível político e geoestratégico.
Da assistência vieram diversas questões, nomeadamente sobre os interesses que se esconderão por detrás de uma política da União Europeia que ruma de acordo com os interesses belicistas, que alguém ganha, e muito, com a guerra foi também sublinhado.
A defesa da paz, neste momento em que vivemos, é uma batalha central para salvaguardar os direitos, as liberdades, as condições de vida dos povos e a própria sobrevivência da Humanidade. Dali saiu o compromisso para elevar a mobilização em defesa da paz, do desarmamento, de um mundo mais justo.
