Venezuela — Portuguese Government disrespects constitutional principles and international law

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) expresses profound indignation at the Portuguese Government's recognition of the US puppet Juan Guaidó's self-proclamation as "president" of Venezuela, in complete disrespect for the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and International Law.

The reprehensible posture of subservience to US interests assumed by the Portuguese government makes it not only an accomplice but also an active promoter of the ongoing coup d'état against the legitimate President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the Venezuelan constitutional regime, continuing two decades of destabilization and threats against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Venezuelan people, which also affect the Portuguese community living in that country.

The new US putschist manoeuvring —now headed by Trump, with the support of Bolsonaro, governments of the so-called «Lima Group», the European Union, and now including Portugal —is supported by the most blatant interference, pressure, blackmail, blockade, theft, media war and threats of intervention against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The US and its subordinates attempt, by suffocating the Venezuelan economy and worsening the living conditions of its people, to break their resistance and reimpose their domination of the rich natural resources of the country: Venezuela possesses, among other riches, the greatest confirmed reserves of oil in the world.

While some insist upon disrespecting the Venezuelan Constitutional regime and the sovereign expression of the Venezuelan people's will in the presidential election of May 2018, the fact is Nicolás Maduro was elected by the popular vote, having obtained a significant victory with 67,8% of the votes (6 245 862 votes), in elections validated by an electoral system recognized as trustworthy by international institutions.

CPPC reiterates that faced with the imposition of an ironclad economic and financial blockade and the attempt at political and diplomatic isolation of Venezuela, those who defend peace and the right of each people to define their future can only be on the side defending the end to interference, for that is the side defending the interests of Venezuela, the Venezuelan people, as well as the Portuguese community living in that country.

CPPC insists that given the continued destabilization and threat of military intervention, the immense foreign aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its people, those who defend peace and the right of each people to define their future can only be on the side of solidarity with the Bolivarian revolution and the Venezuelan people, who struggle to defend their sovereignty, their right to development and social progress, their right to peace!

Unacceptably, the Portuguese Government opted to side with the aggressor, with interference and illegality, against the Venezuelan people, sovereignty, peace and International Law.
