Statement of the World Peace Council (WPC) about the visit of Turkish President Erdogan to Famagusta/Cyprus

Monday, November 16, 2020

The World Peace Council (WPC) condemns the provocative recent visit of Turkish President Erdogan to Cyprus, which has been occupied by the Turkish army for 46 years.
This visit to the besieged city of Famagusta is provocative because it is in clear contrast to any UN effort to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.
This visit in general and the terminology ¨ picnic ¨, as announced by Erdogan, exceeds all limits of international legitimacy and is part of the broader imperialist plans not only in Cyprus but also in the wider region. The policy of the gun boats is emerging once again, as it has been the case for years with the instructions and guidance of American Imperialism and NATO.
Erdogan's move to take part in the "celebrations" for the 37th anniversary of the proclamation of the pseudo-state with a number of government ministers and investors from Turkey constitutes one more invasion and occupation of another part of the Cyprus Republic.
For several days now, Turkish Cypriot peace fighters and supporters of a just solution and the reunification of Cyprus have been on the streets condemning the policies of Erdogan and the "newly elected" puppet of Ankara, shouting "hands down from Cyprus".
Erdogan's inflammatory statements for a two-state solution, which have preceded him and his announcements about the besieged Varosia are another violation of international law and the UN Resolutions on Cyprus.
The WPC supports the peace loving forces, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in their struggle for a just and viable solution, for a reunited Cyprus, free from all guarantors and protectors, a peaceful and demilitarized Cyprus.
The WPC is always on the side of the Cyprus Peace Council and the Cypriot people in its struggle for the liberation of Cyprus from the Turkish occupation army and all foreign troops.
