July 5, in a meeting with Mr. José Matos Correia, Vice-President of the Portuguese Parliament, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) handed more than 13,000 signatures collected for a petition demanding that the Portuguese authorities sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Considering the number of signatures, the petition will be debated in a plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic.

The CPPC delegation included Vice-President Filipe Ferreira and members of the Board Manuela Pontes de Sousa and Gustavo Carneiro. Also present was Gonçalo Costa, from the Projecto Ruído Association, which promoted the campaign "Disarm the Bomb - End Nuclear Weapons, Now!” which also promoted the petition and collected thousands of signatures.

During the meeting with the Vice-President of the Parliament, the organisations present expressed the importance of the object of the petition and, like during the collection of signatures around the country, the repudiation of nuclear weapons was clear, as well as the recognition of the need for Portugal to sign and ratify the treaty banning these weapons. They also stated the commitment of these organisations, together with many others, to continue to promote the campaign for the signing and ratification by Portugal of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The handing of the signatures coincided with the passing of one year since the adoption by the United Nations of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which took place on July 7, 2017.
