No to US military provocations and threats against Venezuela

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation strongly rejects the announcement made last week by the Donald Trump administration that it will build up the presence of naval forces off the coast of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea.

This manoeuvre is part of the provocative actions and threats of US military intervention against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Venezuelan people, with the aim of removing the government led by President Nicolás Maduro, against whom the US recently cast a defamation of allegedly being involved in “drug trafficking”, without providing any evidence to support this claim, and outrageously setting a 15 million dollar reward for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction.

The US administration's apparent and false concerns about drug trafficking would probably be effective if they focused on the fact that the United States is the main consumer of illegal drugs and Colombia, its great ally, the largest producer of drugs in the region and in the world, or to investigate and disclose how, following the aggression and occupation of Afghanistan by the US, that Asian country became one of the largest producers of heroin and other illegal drugs in the world.

Right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which currently has one of its main dissemination in the US, the US Administration, led by Donald Trump, continues to promote destabilisation and aggression against countries and peoples that affirm their sovereignty and do not submit to the interests of American policies. Inhumanely, the US Administration uses the frailty caused by the pandemic to blackmail and brandish with the threat of military intervention against other peoples, probably to deflect attention from the suffering that the epidemic is causing to the US population, laying bare a deeply unfair society where the most disadvantaged are highly exposed by the lack of access to adequate healthcare.

As the CPPC has advocated, the vast resources consumed by astronomical war budgets, must be channelled to ensure development and social progress, to ensure the rights to healthcare, education, social security, housing, employment, and a decent life for all human beings.

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation rejects and condemns this dangerous US warmongering action and calls on all people committed to the defence of peace, sovereignty, international law, to remain alert, denounce the Trump Administration's intentions and demand that the Portuguese government take an immediate step of distancing and repudiation of any intention of military action against Venezuela and the Venezuelan people, which would equally and seriously affect the large Portuguese community living in that country.
