Friday, February 7, 2020

The World Peace Council (WPC) is in grief about the loss of our comrade Fanis Christodoulou, General Secretary of the Cyprus Peace Council on 6th February 2020 at the age of 67.
Comrade Fanis, an outstanding son of the working class of Cyprus, longstanding leadership member of AKEL and committed anti-imperialist peace fighter has championed all his life in the struggle for the benefit of the Cypriot people, for the re-unification of his divided fatherland and the struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the end of the occupation of the island.
Fanis Christodoulou had an important contribution in the 3 years of his tasks as General Secretary of the Cyprus Peace Council, in strengthening of the WPC, of internationalist missions and the trilateral meetings of the peace movements of Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. His anti-imperialist commitment was of decisive importance for the ongoing plans of the WPC to hold in March 2020 the Anti-imperialist conference in Cyprus, for which he was working day and night.
Comrade Fanis was an example for his deeply rooted understanding of the nature of the counter-revolutionary times, with deep appreciation of the role and service of the socialist countries and of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in particular, where he had the chance to study and graduate. As a genuine patriot and internationalist he served as an example to the younger generations which shall continue his legacy.
The Peace movement of Cyprus and the World Peace Council have lost an outstanding figure from its ranks. We express our deep sorrow and condolences to the family of comrade Fanis, to the Cyprus Peace Council and his party AKEL.
Comrade Fanis will be remembered by the WPC in our future struggles!
The WPC will be present in the funeral of Fanis Christodoulou with its General Secretary comrade Thanassis Pafilis in Larnaca on 7th February.
