Initiative of Solidarity «Return the stolen money to Venezuela!» - November 11

Tuesday, December 21, 2021

In response to the appeal launched by several organisations, dozens of people gathered in the late afternoon of the 11th November, outside the Novo Banco headquarters to demand the return of the Venezuelan funds retained by this banking institution. In the speeches it was denounced the inhuman and illegal nature of the US blockade against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the dramatic consequences for its people, including the large Portuguese community living and working there.

Recently, the Novo Banco (which withholds more than 1.5 billion dollars from the Venezuelan State) failed to pay for medicines and vaccines intended for children, which demonstrates the total inhumanity of those who talk every day about 'human rights'.
Among the slogans chanted, it was heard "Stop the blockade! Give back the money!" and "Venezuela will win! Money back, now!"

The appeal:

Return the stolen money to Venezuela!

End the US blockade against the Venezuelan people!

The Novo Banco, a Portuguese financial institution created in the aftermath of the so-called resolution of the former Banco Espirito Santo and today the majority of the bank owned by the US fund Lone Star, does not want to transfer part of the assets belonging to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela deposited there to the Pan American Health Organization for the payment of vaccines and medicines for Venezuelan children.

The request made by the Economic and Social Development Bank of Venezuela (Bandes) on July 22 has not yer received any response from the Novo Banco.

Following the sanctions imposed in 2017 by the United States of America against Venezuela and the Venezuelan people, Venezuelan assets were illegally stolen and accounts of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in various financial institutions were blocked. The Novo Banco was one of the institutions that retained these funds belonging to the Venezuelan state, and which nothing and no one should prevent from being used to meet the needs of the people of that country.

Preventing the purchase of medicines and vaccines, as well as medical equipment, food and raw materials is aimed primarily at hurting the living conditions of the Venezuelan people and, consequently, the Portuguese community living in Venezuela.

The unilateral sanctions imposed on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela openly violate the United Nations Charter and international law and constitute a crime that must be denounced and urgently ended.

The peoples have the right to follow the path they sovereignly decide to follow, without aggression, threats or external blackmail of any kind. This is what best serves peace, progress and development.

The Novo Banco, in which Portuguese governments have sunk billions from the Portuguese people - so far about 8 billion euros - is one of the instruments of the illegal blockade and robbery to the Venezuelan people.

We remind that the deliberate impediment to access medical treatment has already caused the death of Venezuelan citizens, including children - the illegal blockade kills.

We must denounce this crime that continues to be committed, with the passive connivance of the Portuguese government, while it has a significant stake in Novo Banco through the Resolution Fund the Portuguese.

Venezuela is entitled to its resources, including those blocked in Novo Banco!
To reaffirm the demand of fulfillment of this just and urgent measure, several organizations are promoting a public Act, on November 11, at 6:00 pm, in front of the Novo Banco headquarters, at Avenida da Liberdade 195, in Lisbon, under the slogan: Return the money stolen from Venezuela! End the US blockade against the Venezuelan people!
