Free and independent Palestine

On another anniversary of the Palestinian people's massive protests of the against the seizure of their land by the Israeli state, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) reaffirms its unbreakable solidarity and support for that people's courageous struggle for a free, independent and viable state along the borders prior to June 1967.

In 1976, the Israeli government confiscated thousands of hectares of land from Palestinian villages in Galilee in order to proceed with the illegal expansion of settlements, which led to a general strike and widespread repudiation among the Palestinian population. On 30 March, Israeli troops harshly repressed a peaceful protest, murdering six Palestinians and wounding and arresting hundreds. Arab cities and towns were declared military zones and closed by Israeli authorities; in many curfew was declared. The date became known as "Land Day" and is celebrated by Palestinians as a milestone in their history, struggle and identity as a people.

The theft of Palestinian land and the expansion of illegal settlements has not stopped since then. In itself, the establishment of the separation wall represents the annexation of 45% of Palestinian territories occupied by Israel on the West Bank of the Jordan River, leaving about 12% of historical Palestine to the Palestinians to live.

To seize land, Israel uses two main methods. In the territories occupied in 1967, military orders are enough (to date more than 1300!). In the Palestinian land and property within Israeli territory, the Israeli parliament has issued dozens of laws for this purpose – such as those that attribute to a private entity the management of “absent” Palestinian properties (because they were forced to flee!), so that they can be sold, but only to Jews or Jewish entities. This authorizes the theft of property belonging to more than a million Arabs since the formation of the state of Israel.

The illegalities and crimes of Israel's Zionist regime against the Palestinian people are numerous, serious and continue, under the watch of many who continue their collusion, whether by opportunism, effective complicity or simply by subservience to the great partner of Zionism, the United States of America.

However, in these times of extraordinarily difficult, times that demand a break with the mantle of silence and hypocrisy around the Palestinian cause that some people try to weave, CPPC stands firmly beside this brave people and calls on both men and women, democrats as well as advocates of peace, to help them in the defence of the State of Palestine along the borders prior to 4 June 1967 and with its capital in East Jerusalem and for the right of return of Palestinian refugees and the release of all political prisoners and Palestinians from Israeli jails.

Palestina livre e independente

30-03-2020
