The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) welcomes the vote in the United Nations General Assembly, which once again on November 7 overwhelmingly condemned the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the United States against Cuba and demanded its lifting. This is the 28th. consecutive time that this UN body has spoken on this matter, and always in a resounding way.

This year 187 countries voted in favour of the resolution proposing/demanding an end to the blockade, while three countries rejected it and two abstained. The US and Israel voted against the end of the blockade, reaffirming their usual positions, and Brazil, in a particularly negative sign of President Bolsonaro government's increasing subservience to US interests. The abstentions were from Colombia and Ukraine, who also usually align with the dictates of the United States, being instruments of US foreign policy in their respective regions.

Despite the massive vote every year since 1992, the US disrespects UN resolutions and not only does not end the blockade, but even intensifies it, strengthening its extraterritorial character.
Despite the huge damage to the Cuban economy and society (of many thousand million dollars), the Cuban people persist in their pursuit of sovereignty, progress and social justice and insist on sharing it with the world, of which the medical missions are just an example.

The CPPC reaffirms its everlasting solidarity with the Cuban people and demands that the Portuguese authorities give continuity and practical expression to the just position they once again assumed in the UN General Assembly, raising their voice in favour of peoples' sovereignty and equality between states, the end of the blockade against Cuba and the return of the illegally stolen Cuban territory by the United States, where the Guantanamo military base is located, which today functions as an illegal detention and torture centre of the US armed forces.

Cuba de novo vitoriosa na ONU

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) saúda a votação da Assembleia-Geral das Nações Unidas, que uma vez mais, no dia 7 de Novembro, condenou de forma esmagadora o bloqueio económico, comercial e financeiro dos Estados Unidos da América contra Cuba e exigiu o seu levantamento. Esta é a 28.ª vez consecutiva que este órgão da ONU se pronuncia neste sentido, e sempre de forma contundente.

Este ano, 187 países votaram favoravelmente a resolução que propõe/exige o fim do bloqueio, enquanto três países a rejeitaram e dois se abstiveram. Votaram contra o fim do bloqueio os próprios EUA e Israel, reafirmando as suas posições habituais, e ainda o Brasil, num sinal particularmente
negativo de crescente subserviência do Governo do Presidente Bolsonaro aos interesses dos EUA. As abstenções foram da Colômbia e da Ucrânia, também elas habitualmente alinhadas com os ditames dos EUA, constituindo-se como instrumentos da política externa norte-americana nas respectivas regiões.

Apesar das votações massivas registadas todos os anos desde 1992, os EUA desrespeitam as resoluções da ONU e não só não põem fim ao bloqueio como inclusivamente o intensificaram, reforçando o seu carácter extraterritorial. Apesar dos imensos prejuízos causados à economia e à sociedade cubanas (de muitos milhões de milhões de dólares), o povo cubano persiste no rumo de soberania, progresso e justiça social e insiste em partilhá-lo com o mundo, de que as missões médicas são apenas um exemplo.

O CPPC reafirma a sua solidariedade de sempre ao povo cubano e exige das autoridades portuguesas que dêem continuidade e expressão prática à justa posição que uma vez mais assumiram na Assembleia-geral das Nações Unidas, erguendo a voz em favor da soberania dos povos e da igualdade entre Estados, do fim do bloqueio a Cuba e da devolução do território cubano ilegalmente roubado pelos EUA, onde se encontra instalada a Base militar de Guantanamo, que funciona hoje como centro ilegal de detenção e tortura das forças armadas norte-americanas.
