CPPC stands in solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people

Tuesday, June 28, 2022

On the occasion of the 74th. anniversary of the Nakba – an Arabic word meaning “catastrophe”, with which the Palestinians name the expulsion from their lands at the time of the creation of the State of Israel, on May 15, 1948 –, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) salutes the Palestinian people's resistance against the Israeli occupation and oppression and reaffirms its solidarity with their just struggle for respect and fulfilment of their national rights. Signalling this date is of utmost importance when witnessing one of the most serious moments of the international situation and premeditatedly promoting the forgetfulness of the Palestinian national question and the suffering of an entire people.

In the past years, the United States of America, in flagrant violation of international law and with the tacit, if not explicit, support of the main western powers, recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transferred its embassy to that city; they also recognised as an integral part of Israel the Golan Heights, Syrian territory illegally occupied by Israel; and promoted the so-called “deal of the century”, aiming to perpetuate the Israeli occupation and make impossible the two-state solution enshrined in numerous United Nations resolutions.

In the past years, also in flagrant violation of international law, Israel has passed the so-called “Nation State Law”, which segregates the Israeli population of Arab origin; reinforced the siege of Gaza and continued the violent repression of the Palestinian population in this territory as if turning it into a huge open-air prison; and proceeded with the annexation of illegally occupied territories in the West Bank.
At the same time, it has maintained, for more than seven decades, with total impunity and arrogance, the occupation and colonisation of Palestinian territories, in flagrant disregard of international law, of the national rights of the Palestinian people.

Despite the current situation, the CPPC does not forget, nor does it allow to fall into oblivion, the fairness of the Palestinian cause, and urges democrats to:

- Condemn the policy of colonisation, occupation and repression practiced by Israel against the Palestinian people;
- Demand peace in the Middle East and an end to occupations and acts of aggression;
- Demand that the Portuguese Government, in the forums in which it participates, defend the rights of the Palestinian people as internationally established in UN resolutions; and formally recognise the State of Palestine;
- Express solidarity with the just struggle of the Palestinian people for their inalienable national rights, for the building of a free, independent and viable State of Palestine on the pre-1967 borders, with its capital in East Jerusalem, and the respect for the right of return of Palestinian refugees, under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, as well as the release of Palestinian political prisoners from Israeli prisons.

- Condenarem a política de colonização, ocupação e repressão, praticada por Israel contra o povo palestino;
- Exigirem a paz no Médio Oriente e o fim das ocupações e atos de agressão;
- Reclamarem junto do Governo português que, nos fóruns em que este participa, defenda os direitos do povo palestino tal como estão estabelecidos internacionalmente em resoluções da ONU; e que reconheça formalmente o Estado da Palestina;
