CPPC condemns the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and reaffirms its solidarity with the Palestinian people

Friday, December 8, 2017

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) firmly condemns the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the announced intention to transfer the US embassy to this city, a decision that entails an authentic act of aggression upon the Palestinian people, with unpredictable and dangerous consequences for peace in the whole region.

With this unacceptable and provocative measure, the US once again, and opening, provide cover to the zionist policy of illegal occupation of the territories of Palestine, including the total occupation of the city of Jerusalem by Israel. An act that unmasks the cynical role of the US, who has always supported the Israeli occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people, while also presenting itself as the "impartial mediator" of the conflict.

CPPC alerts that this dangerous decision by the US administration is part of a vaster plan aimed at a new wave of encroachment and destabilization in the Middle East by the US and its allies, with the possibility of new aggressions to countries in this region.

CPPC considers that the Portuguese government - respecting the Portuguese Constitution and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and International Law - should demand the clear condemnation of the decision of the US administration.

Reaffirming the demand for the creation of an independent and viable Palestinian State, in the borders prior to June 1967, with capital in East Jerusalem, and the respect for the right of return of Palestinian refugees, as stipulated by numerous UN resolutions, CPPC appeals to the solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just struggle for the end to Israeli occupation and repression.
