Once again this March, the Belgrade Forum for a World of Equals, the Club of Generals and Admirals of Serbia and other independent non-party associations in Serbia pay tribute to the victims of NATO 1999 aggression on Serbia (FRY). This aggression took lives of more than thousand defenders, military and the police and their officers, and also of thousands of civilians, including 87 children. Regrettably, the final list of the civilian casualties has not been determined as yet, although the number is estimated to stand at over 3,000. About 10.000 people were wounded.

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) manifests its deep concern for the review of the US nuclear policy, made public by the Pentagon last February 2nd.

CPPC considers that the so-called US Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) represents a particularly dangerous step in the militarist escalation that marks our time, which could have catastrophic consequences for Humanity, unless constrained through strong initiatives in favor of world Peace.

CPPC has always considered that the problems of the Korean people would have to be resolved by the Korean people, without foreign interference. The events of the past week confirm this. After a period of particular military tension in the region, both parts of Korea restarted a dialogue, long interrupted, and maintain open communication on matters of common interest. The Winter Olympic Games are only the most visible aspect.

The world peace movement, the progressive forces and defenders of social justice, sovereignty and solidarity have marked, a few days ago, the five years since the passing of Comandante Hugo Chávez, whose arrival in the Venezuelan Government has brought historical achievements to the people. The hard work for overcoming so many decades of plunder, domination and oppression while affirming national sovereignty had only begun and the reactionary forces, supported by the imperialist powers, began their eager activity to prevent the continuity of the process.

The solidarity movement and the World Peace Council have reiterated their support to the efforts of Korean rapprochement and for de-escalation of tensions in the Korean Peninsula, for security and peace in the region and the world. Therefore, they have emphatically denounced the imperialist interference that the US maintains and deepens in the region especially since the 1950s, through war and the division of Korea.

The President of the National Leadership of the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), Ilda Figueiredo, represented CPPC in a conference held in Brussels on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, promoted by the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL).

The end of nuclear weapons and massive destruction, and general, simultaneous and controlled disarmament were reaffirmed as fundamental conditions towards ensuring peace and safety in the world.

Intervention by Ilda Figueiredo

Ignoring decades of the peoples’ struggle against weapons of mass destruction, the imperialist powers gathered in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and their major leader, the USA, do not even flinch before putting nuclear weapons in the center of their policy. There are currently almost 15,000 nuclear warheads spread around the world and the modest reduction of this arsenal does not mean less danger; our mobilization remains urgent.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999) guaranteeing sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia and the wide autonomy of Kosovo and Metohija within Serbia, is the highest binding legal document that obliges all members to this World Organization, including the member states of the EU, NATO, the OSCE, the OIC, the AU, and the EAU. Resolution 1244 is the only reliable basis and the framework for any negotiations concerning status.
